Zanzibar or Barbados
KEY TAKEAWAYS
● Zanzibar is cheaper than Barbados and better for those on a budget as it has more lower-end options (hotels, restaurants) available. Barbados is mainly filled with high-end resorts and expensive restaurants and is more suited to wealthy tourists.
● Barbados feels safer than Zanzibar, although I felt safe in both. Barbados is mostly Christian and Zanzibar is predominately Muslim, so you must dress accordingly outside your hotel. On both, practice general safety precautions.
● The infrastructure is much better in Barbados.
● Meeting other (solo) travelers is easier in Zanzibar than in Barbados.
● Barbados and Zanzibar both offer a wide range of activities. Barbados is better for surfing and snorkeling with turtles, in Zanzibar, you can pet Giant Aldabra tortoises. Regarding food, Barbados is focused on seafood and rum, and Zanzibar on spices.
● Public transport is more time-efficient in Barbados, as there’s a well-connected road system. You have tour operators and taxis on both destinations.
● Despite their geographical separation, both have pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and rich history.

Barbados vs Zanzibar: A quick overview
Here’s a quick overview of similarities and differences, and pros and cons between both tropical islands.
Zanzibar and Barbados are similar in a fact that they are tropical destinations with idyllic white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. On both you can find a strong cultural heritage, experience vibrant culture, try traditional dishes, and learn about their rich history. They are both home to UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Even though both islands are somewhat similar, there are some key differences, despite their location, that I found during my trip to both islands.
The first one would be language. While Swahili is predominantly spoken in Zanzibar, English is the official language in Barbados. Zanzibar’s spice plantations contrast with the sugarcane fields in Barbados. You can feel more culture in Zanzibar. There is more spicy and flavorful food from various influences in Zanzibar, and Bajan cuisine with rum in Barbados.
After visiting both, there are also some pros and cons that might be in favor of Barbados or Zanzibar.
Zanzibar’s pros include cultural diversity reflected in cuisine, music, and architecture, UNESCO World Heritage Site Stone Town, and a more budget-friendly option between the two. Cons of visiting Spice Island are two wet seasons, limited flights, and the need to dress conservatively outside hotels.
On the other hand, the pros for visiting Barbados is year-round sunshine, is great for different water sports, has famous cultural events, and is more developed. The downsides of visiting Barbados are higher prices for hotels and activities and less cultural diversity.
Zanzibar vs Barbados: Detailed comparison
Location and Getting there
As you can see on a map, Barbados and Zanzibar are two well-defined tropical island paradises, each offering unique experiences set in contrasting geographical locations. They both have international airports with major airlines flying through direct or connecting flights.
Barbados is located in the Eastern Caribbean as part of the Windward Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean. Islands in the Zanzibar archipelago, are located off the coast of Tanzania, in the Indian Ocean.
Barbados is North of the Equator and Zanzibar is south of the Equator. The distance between Barbados and Zanzibar is 11.112 km (6.905 mi).
Have a look at the minimum flight times from different starting points:
When choosing between Zanzibar or Barbados, you should also consider how long it will take you to get to each location.
Is Barbados or Zanzibar closer based on your location:
• For United States-based readers, Barbados is much closer than Zanzibar.
• If you are flying from Europe, the flying time difference is minimal, so maybe the flight cost or number of stopovers will be the determining factor.
• From the Middle East, like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Qatar, Zanzibar is much more accessible than Barbados.
• If you are based in Australia and New Zealand, flying to Zanzibar will be a shorter option. Getting to Barbados will take more than a day with (at least) one stopover.
Have a look at the size difference between Zanzibar and Barbados on the map below:
Barbados is an island in the Caribbean that covers 430 km² (166 mi²) of predominantly coral limestone karst landscape, with sandy shores, rugged cliffs, and lush tropical forests.
Barbados island has a lively atmosphere with a population of almost 300.000 people, reflecting a blend of African, British, and Caribbean influences in its culture and cuisine.
Zanzibar is an archipelago just off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa.
The total land area of Zanzibar is 2,643 km² (1,020 mi²). Unguja Island covers approximately 1,666 km² (643 mi²) of land and Pemba Island 985 km² (380 mi²). The landscape is characterized by palm-fringed shores, spice plantations, tropical forests, and the historic Stone Town area, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Zanzibar has a population of around 1.9 million, influenced by Swahili, Arab, European, and Indian cultures, evident in its architecture, cuisine, and customs. Most of them live in Unguja.
Based on the above, Zanzibar Island (Unguja) is 3.87 times as big as Barbados, which is also portraied on the map above.
Climate and Weather
Barbados and Zanzibar are both tropical destinations but have a different weather pattern and seasons. So potentially, you can visit both in one year.
I visited Barbados in February and Zanzibar in August.
They have completely different high seasons. The best time to visit Barbados is between December and April however the best time to visit Zanzibar is in January and February and between June and September.
Expand the accordions for a detailed description of the best time to visit each location.
The best time to visit Barbados is between December and April. During these months the weather is dry and hot, with plenty of sunshine and lower chances of rainfall.
During high season you can expect temperatures between 26°C (79°F) and 30°C (86°F). Weather can be windy and the evenings can get cooler, with temperatures dropping to around 22°C (72°F).
Low season in Barbados is between June and November. This is the rainy season with the highest likelihood of storms and a somewhat small risk of hurricanes. Location in the tropics means that the weather is hot during the whole year.
The best time to visit Zanzibar is during the longer dry season between June and September. There should be almost no rain and more sunny days. A good period for a visit is also from January to early March, with lovely sunny days and some afternoon clouds. It is one of the summer island destinations.
During the long dry season, you can expect temperatures between 25°C (77°F) and 30°C (86°F). Weather can be windy on the Eastern side of the island and evenings can get cooler, with temperatures dropping to around 20 °C (69 °F).
The low season in Zanzibar is from March to May (long rains) and November to mid-December (short rains) which is Tanzania’s rainy season. While temperatures will still be high you can expect rain during the whole day or more days in a row. The humidity level will be high.
FRIENDLY REMINDER
• HIGH SEASON is usually the best time to travel to a destination but comes with higher prices and more tourists.
• LOW SEASON usually sees fewer tourists and is a better time to save some money, since prices are usually lower.
• SHOULDER SEASON will usually get you the best of both ‘worlds’. Prices are not that high, and there are usually fewer tourists than in the main season but the weather might still not be optimal.
Safety
Regarding statistics, Barbados wins over Zanzibar in safety, though incidents involving tourists are rare in both destinations. I felt safer in Barbados.
Barbados and Zanzibar rely heavily on tourism and try to ensure a safe environment for tourists. Tourism brings in about 27% of Zanzibar’s GDP per capita and 17,5% of GDP per capita in Barbados.
Barbados is one of the safest Caribbean destinations according to various rankings. Crime rates are low and there are few recorded cases of attacks on tourists.
I never felt bad walking outside and traveled around using buses and taxis. I would advise using common sense precautions and avoiding bad areas.
Zanzibar is also safe for solo female travelers. Crime rates are low, but the majority of the population practices Islam.
Therefore it is essential to dress conservatively outside of hotels, by covering your legs, midsection, and shoulders, if you don’t want to experience unnecessary harassment. I also never walked outside at night alone.
Accommodation and Hotel options
Barbados and Zanzibar both offer various accommodation options.
You can find luxurious beachfront properties, stunning resorts, and mid-range hotels in both locations. Zanzibar however has more backpacker accommodation options, which Barbados lacks.
I usually stay in affordable luxury types of accommodation and I LOVE if they serve breakfast.
I’ve stayed in 3 different places in Zanzibar, beach hotel in Jambiani, Nungwi, and Stone Town Hotel. In Barbados I changed my accommodation twice; from Meridian Inn to OceanBlue Resort.
A quick comparison between hotels in Zanzibar and Barbados hotels:
• Type of accommodation: Zanzibar has more options to choose from. From resorts, backpacker hostels, and affordable 3* star hotels. Barbados on the other hand has more luxurious resorts and 5* hotel options.
• Cost: Accommodation is more expensive in Barbados. There is a wider range of budget options available in Zanzibar. It will be cheaper to sleep in the beachfront hotel with a pool and breakfast in Zanzibar.
• Location and setting: Most of the Zanzibar hotels are located on the idyllic beachfront locations, with the exception of Stone Town. In Barbados, only some mid-range hotels and resorts have a prime oceanfront location. Many accommodation options in Barbados are not ‘on the beach’ but more inland.
Barbados’ accommodation infrastructure is diverse but targets affluent travelers.
You can find hotels, apartments, guesthouses, and private villas.
Staying at guesthouses and studios, like Meridian Inn, will be the most budget-friendly option, where you can expect to pay from $100 per night. I stayed there and loved the walking distance to the Gap and the closeness to Dover Beach.
Mid-range hotels and resorts start at $200 per night. Some of the best price-to-performance ones are Southern Palms Beach Club on Dover Beach and OceanBlue Resort. I stayed at OceanBlue and liked it a lot.
Barbados is known for its luxurious 5-star hotels, which can be very expensive. Do note that some hotels and resorts offer only multi-day stays. This means that you can’t book a one-night stay but have to book the room for 3, 5, or 7 nights.
If you are looking for an exclusive stay in Barbados or are spending a honeymoon in Barbados, have a look at the luxurious 5-star Fairmont Royal Pavilion Barbados Resort. Their rooms are pricey, and the one-night stay during the high season can cost from $2000 a night. If this is too much for your budget, opt for the Crane Resort, next to pink-sand Crane Beach.
Opposite to Barbados, Zanzibar offers a variety of accommodation options to suit all types of travelers.
In Zanzibar, you can find hostels, hotels, guesthouses, villas, and luxury resorts.
You can choose the option that suits your budget and sleep in a backpackers hostel from $15 per night with breakfast included. Hostels can be found around the island, including Paje, Nungwi, and Stone Town. On the East Coast of Zanzibar, I stayed in one of the best beach hotels in Jambiani, New Teddy’s on the Beach.
For a nicer stay, you won’t have to break the bank to do it. Beachfront hotels with pool and breakfast start at $70 per night. Check out The Loop in Jambiani Beach or a more upscale Z Hotel in Nungwi.
On Spice Island, you can also find stunning 5-star hotels, some also offering all-inclusive. For a stay in all-inclusive Kilindi Zanzibar on Kendwa, prices start at $800 per night. And can go all the way up to $2000 when booking Xanadu Villas & Retreat.
Hotels in Stone Town also vary in price. From $10 hostels, and $60 Shoki Shoki House hotel to $500 per night stays in Park Hyatt Zanzibar. There is something for everyone in Zanzibar.
Transportation and Getting around
What are the main ways of getting around Barbados and Zanzibar?
Zanzibar and Barbados both have various transport options. Zanzibar’s transport options are more laid-back and run without schedule, so plan a lot of time if you decide to use one. Barbados has a more structured public bus network that is both cheap and time-efficient.
I was traveling with taxis in Zanzibar. In Barbados I used reggae buses and rented a car for 2 days, to explore the island.
A quick comparison between transportation in Barbados and Zanzibar:
• Transportation in Barbados is more developed.
• Public transport in Barbados is more time-efficient than the one compared to Zanzibar.
• Using taxis between touristic areas is more time efficient in Zanzibar compared to public transport.
Barbados has a developed transportation network, that includes colorful buses and private taxis. You can also book a driver if you wish to go on a day tour.
The most fun and cheapest way to travel around is by public buses. Riding on one is an experience on its own. I was using them a lot!
They are bright yellow and blue in color or come as a small white van with loud music playing. Around the South Coast going to/from Bridgetown they have a set rate of $3.5 BBD ($2 US).
You can even use a public bus number 3D for going to or from the airport to Bridgetown for $3.5 BBD. A steal!
If you don’t want to wait for a bus, or feel like a sardine in one, use a taxi. Taxi fares vary based on the route. You can negotiate for the price but the fares are from $20 US and up.
Rental cars are a popular option. Before renting a car, make a plan since you most probably won’t need it for the whole duration of your stay.
You can rent a car from various agencies across the island, with prices starting from $40 per day. Rates may vary, but I would advise you to book it in advance. When I was there in February the demand for cars was higher than supply so I couldn’t extend my rental and some couldn’t rent one.
Just like Barbados, Zanzibar’s transportation options are various. Here you will find a blend of affordable and flexible options to suit every budget needs.
The local modes of getting around are tuk tuks, boda bodas, and dala dalas, traditional minibusses that run on the island.
They don’t have a schedule so if you are tight on time, they might not be the best option. However, they are budget-friendly with fares typically ranging from $0.20 to $1 USD, depending on the distance traveled.
Taxis are available, and many resorts have their trustworthy drivers. If you want to get from one part of Zanzibar to another in the shortest amount of time (or have stops in between) then a taxi might be your best option. They are not metered so always negotiate for the price BEFORE going to the car.
Taxis were my main mode of transportation in Zanzibar.
There are rental scooters available and rental cars for more adventurous travelers. Rental car prices may vary depending on the duration and your Zanzibar itinerary.
Things to do and Places to see
Both islands offer a diverse range of activities, things to do, and places to see.
What you want to do depends on your interests and preferences. I was never bored and have included plenty of activities in my Zanzibar and Barbados itinerary. I preferred the activities in Zanzibar.
Barbados’s activities revolve around beach time, watersports like snorkeling, surfing and kitesurfing, rum, Bajan culture, and animal encounters. I loved driving around the island and admired all the buildings in Bridgetown. Tours here felt more touristy in comparison to Zanzibar.
Zanzibar or Spice Island has plenty of things to do as well. The main ones are discovering the difference between Zanzibar beaches, learning about spices on a spice tour, wandering through the narrow alleys of Stone Town, and learning Swahili words and phrases.
A quick comparison between things to do in Barbados and Zanzibar:
• They both have attractions, but as a whole, I would say Barbados has more of them.
• Attractions and tours are cheaper in Zanzibar.
• Barbados has better scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities, plus a higher chance of seeing sea turtles. Zanzibar has Giant Aldabra tortoises.
• Both destinations are great for watersports, but Barbados wins since there are more diving options, surfing, and kitesurfing beaches.
• For more active vacations you can book a safari from Zanzibar to Tanzania, while island hopping from Barbados is a bit harder.
Top activities in Barbados:
• Explore Bridgetown: Bridgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the capital of Barbados with historical landmarks, colonial architecture, the Garrison area, and bustling markets. I loved walking around this small capital.
• Snorkel at Carlisle Bay: The best way to swim with turtles and shipwrecks in Barbados is by snorkeling on Carlisle Bay. You can book a tour or if you are a good swimmer find them on your own. I tried both!
• Visit the working sugar plantation St. Nicholas Abbey: Join a guided tour to one of the Seven wonders of Barbados’s still-working sugar plantations, go inside historic plantation houses, and gardens, take a railway ride, learn about the island’s colonial past, and find out about the rum making process. Amazing and informative tour and the owner is super nice.
• Go underground in Harrison’s Cave: Visit karst on a tropical island and admire stalagmites and stalactites in a tropical cave. It’s warm inside. I would say it is impressive but not as breathtaking as Postojna Cave (which also has a train) or Škocjan Caves on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
• Relax on a beach: Barbados has more than 80 beaches so it will be hard to choose your favorite. In general, the ones on the West are calmer and more suitable for swimming, and the ones on the Atlantic side are world-renowned surfing beaches. My favorite is Dover Beach.
• Join the Bajan food tour and dine at Oistins Fish Fry: Try delicious Bajan cuisine, on one of the food tours or sample local delicacies, from flying fish sandwiches to savory cou-cou, in Oistins fishing village. Loved the food!
• Go on a Rum tasting: Taste the flavors of Barbados’ signature spirit with guided rum tastings at Mount Guy Rum or other local distilleries. Just do it and have fun!
Top activities in Zanzibar:
• Explore historic Stone Town: Stone Town is the name given to the historic center of Zanzibar City, the capital of Zanzibar. The best way to see this UNESCO World Heritage Site is by going on a Stone Town walking tour, where you will be shown around the maze of alleyways. You will learn the uncomfortable truth about the slave trade, and see the difference between Indian and Arabic doors. THIS IS A MUST!
• Visit one of Zanzibar’s Spice plantations: Zanzibar is nicknamed ‘Spice Island’ for a reason. It was once a major trading hub for species. Cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and pepper were all part of a trade. I learned a lot about their usage of them, and tasting them fresh was also special.
• Spot rare monkeys in Jozani Forest: Jozani Forest, Zanzibar’s only national park, and home to endemic Red Colobus Monkeys, and different types of mangroves. It is safe because monkeys don’t “come close and attack people”.
• Take a boat to Prison Island: Learn the true purpose of Prison Island (Changuu Island). Explore historic prison ruins, stroll along picturesque beaches, and take a photo with Giant Aldabra tortoises, a gift from Seychelles.
• Relax on a beach: Zanzibar is famous for its pristine beaches. From the ones on the East Coast, like Jambiani and Paje, where you can spot the sunrise, to the ones on the West, like Nungwi and Kendwa, where you can admire beautiful sunsets.
• Join Stone Town food tour and dine at Forodhani food Gardens: Try delicious Zanzibari cuisine and sample local delicacies, from Zanzibari pizza to seafood skewers.
• Book a safari from Zanzibar to Tanzania: combine your tropical island holiday with a safari in the best parks in mainland Tanzania, Serengeti and Ngorongoro, and get the chance to see the Big Five.

Beaches and Scenery
I loved spending time on beaches on both of these islands and it’s hard for me to pick up a favorite.
They are similar in their looks but different at the same time. I’ve visited many in Barbados (my favorite is Dover) and Zanzibar (my favorite is Jambiani) and loved the fact they are all free to enter.
Both of those destinations have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Postcard-perfect scenery with white sand, turquoise ocean, and palm trees make both of these islands a perfect honeymoon destination and beach lover paradise.
What was interesting for me to find out is that neither Zanzibar nor Barbados are of volcanic origins, so the islands are relatively flat and don’t offer many island views or hiking trails.
They have coral reefs but are smaller than the ones compared to Costa Rica or the Dominican Republic. Both islands are characterized by karstic landscapes. In Barbados you can see karst on the Island by visiting Harrison’s Cave, one of the seven wonders of Barbados.
A quick comparison between beaches and scenery in Zanzibar and Barbados:
• Zanzibar and Barbados are both relatively flat islands and don’t offer many hiking trails.
• Both Zanzibar and Barbados have pristine white sand beaches.
• The difference between high and low tide is most noticeable on Zanzibar beaches in the East, like Jambiani and Paje. On north Zanzibar beaches, and in beaches in Barbados the difference in tides is not as noticeable.
• In Zanzibar all beaches are suitable for swimming. The difference between high and low tide on the eastern beaches of Zanzibar, Jambiani, and Paje, may affect swimming conditions at certain times of the day.
• Best swimming beaches in Barbados, are in the South and West which usually have a lifeguard on duty. Barbados East Coast Beaches are more suitable for water sports due to stronger currents and waves, so swim at your own risk. Thus, visitors to Barbados may need to be more selective about where they swim.
• Beaches in both locations are public and free to enter. There are no private beaches but sometimes it is hard to find beach access as you are not allowed to walk through other people’s properties to access a free beach.
• Barbados’s beaches are often busier and attract larger crowds compared to Zanzibar’s beaches.
Barbados has more than 80 white-sand beaches, where many of them have the title of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Beaches in Barbados can roughly be divided into two groups. Or possibly even three. West Coast beaches, East Coast beaches, and South Coast beaches.
West Coast Barbados beaches are on the Caribbean side and have calm waters, powdery white sand, are more touristic and urbanized. They are ideal for turtle spotting, sailing, swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing.
East Coast Barbados beaches are facing the Atlantic Ocean. They are great for surfing, beach walk, and sun bathing but due to underwater currents, swim at your own risk. The most famous beach on this side is Bathsheba which feels more untouched than the West side of the island.
South Coast Barbados Beaches offer the best of both worlds. Beaches have white sand but water is not as calm and already has some waves. So you can swim and relax, or try a range of watersports (surfing, kitesurfing, snorkeling etc.).
During my one week in Barbados, I’ve visited many of the best beaches in Barbados. My absolute favorite is Dover Beach, followed by Crane Beach, Carlisle Bay, and Miami Beach. Mullins Beach was a bit quieter.
I absolutely love the fact that all beaches in Barbados are free to enter, which is not the case in the South Pacific Islands, like Vanuatu, Fiji and Samoa. Even the ones in front of resorts are open to the public.
Top 3 Barbados beaches:
• Carlisle Bay: Beautiful turquoise ocean, with calm waters, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, turtle spotting and diving among shipwrecks.
• Crane Beach: Famous for pink-tinged sands and dramatic cliffs on the Atlantic side of the island, great for relaxation and breathtaking views.
• Bathsheba Beach: Known for its rugged beauty and world-class surfing waves, offering a stunning backdrop for photographers.
Beyond the beaches, Barbados offers lush tropical landscapes, sugarcane plantations, rugged cliffs, and stunning panoramic views. There aren’t many hikes you can go to in Barbados. For a change of scenery, you can visit Harrisons Cave.
Much like in Barbados, there are many best beaches to stay in Zanzibar.
In general, beaches in Zanzibar island have white sand and the turquoise color of the ocean. They are most often referred to as the beaches on the southeast (Jambiani and Paje) and northwest (Nungwi and Kendwa).
Zanzibar’s East coast has idyllic beaches Jambiani and Paje. The tide difference may affect swimming conditions, but most of the accommodations in Jambiani have a pool. Beaches here are great for watching a sunrise, swimming, kitesurfing, and seeing algae plantations.
Zanzibar’s North coast beaches Nungwi and Kendwa are great for swimming and sunsets. They are more lively and touristy. They are close to Mnemba Atoll if you want to go snorkeling there.
I went to Mnemba Atoll but wasn’t impressed. Not only were guides chasing dolphins with boats but there were too many boats next to the Mnemba island (you can’t go on in) and snorkeling was not good at all.
When I visited various beaches in my Zanzibar itinerary, the biggest crowd was on Nungwi beach, followed by Kendwa. Other beaches had people but they didn’t feel crowded.
I liked Jambiani and Paje Beach more than Nungwi and Kendwa.
Top 3 Zanzibar beaches:
• Paje Beach: Idyllic turquoise waters and powdery white sands, perfect for kitesurfing.
• Nungwi Beach: Famous sunsets viewing beach and great beach for swimming.
• Bwejuu Beach: Stunning beach perfect for a secluded retreat, and for relaxation.
Inland of Unguja, you will find tropical forests that you can see in Jozani Park, spice plantations, and historic villages. You will find only a handful of hiking trails in Zanzibar.
Culture and Heritage
Both destinations have a rich blend of cultures, evident in their food, language, architecture, music, and culinary traditions.
In my opinion, Zanzibar is more authentic, as in Barbados everything felt more ‘familiar’.
Barbados’s culture is a blend of African, British, and Caribbean influences, shaped by centuries of colonialism and slavery. Zanzibar’s culture was shaped by a fusion of African, Arabian, Indian, and European influences as a result of the island being a major trading hub.
There are UNESCO World Heritage sites in both destinations. In Zanzibar this title is reserved for Stone Town and in Barbados the UNESCO site is Bridgetown.
I highly recommend going on a Stone Town walking tour, the old part of Zanzibar City, to learn more about the town’s history. There are many interesting buildings and intricate doors to take photos of.
A quick comparison between Culture and Heritage in Zanzibar and Barbados:
• Zanzibar feels more authentic compared to Barbados.
• If comparing UNESCO World Heritage sites, Stone Town in Zanzibar is more interesting to see than Bridgetown in Barbados.
• Culture in Zanzibar is a blend of Swahili, Arab, European, and Indian influences. Culture in Barbados is a blend of African, British, and Caribbean influences.
• Zanzibar’s cultural identity reflects centuries of trade and migration. Barbados’s culture was shaped by its colonial past and slavery.

Food and Dining
If you are a food lover, both destinations will satisfy your tastebuds.
The culinary scene in Barbados and Zanzibar is a reflection of the island’s historic pasts. Bajan cuisine and Zanzibar cuisine result from African and European influences, paired with delicious local produce.
Zanzibar, also named Spice Island, is well known for its spices, like cloves, cinnamon, and cardamom. On the other hand, Barbados highlights with flying fish sandwiches.
Both destinations offer vibrant street food and fresh, tropical fruits. If I had to choose, food in Zanzibar would be the winner, especially when visiting the Forodhani food market. The exception would be rum. Barbados rum is one of a kind, so make sure to book a rum-tasting tour.
I’ve found more options for cheap bites in Zanzibar, and meals in a restaurant are more expensive in Barbados.
A quick comparison between food in Barbados and food in Zanzibar:
• Barbados and Zanzibar cuisine is a result of a diverse range of influences.
• Seafood features highly on menus in both locations.
• You can find tropical fruit in both, but I preferred the fruit in Zanzibar.
• Barbados has extremely good rum but don’t skip on trying Dawa in Zanzibar.
• Dining out is cheaper in Zanzibar.
Barbados cuisine is a fusion of African, British, and Caribbean influences.
There are a lot of fish dishes, macaroni pies and dishes like pudding and souse. For breakfast, you can get a traditional English breakfast, sweet pancakes, waffles, or a bowl of tropical fruit.
A must-visit dining spot is Oistins Fish Fry on Friday. There you can try freshly caught seafood, such as flying fish, swordfish, kingfish, tuna, mahi mahi, and others. Prices at Oistins typically range from $10 to $20 (BBD $20 to $40) per meal, making it an affordable and authentic dining experience.
Another iconic place to eat is Cuzz’s Fish Stand on Pebbles Beach. There you will have the best, freshly made fish sandwiches from $7 for a single, and to $10 for a double sandwich (BBD $13 to $20).
Since you are in Barbados, you can not skip on sipping rum punch. A serving of it will cost from $5 (BBD $10) and up. Mount Gay Rum Distillery, the oldest in the World, offers guided tours and tastings (book in advance since the spots are limited!).
Barbados beer costs from $2 (BBD $4) and imported ones from $4 (BBD $8). Cocktail prices start at $10 (BBD $20). Most of the beach bars and restaurants have a happy hour from 12pm – 1 pm, and/or in the afternoon from 4 or 5 pm to 6 pm.
Zanzibar cuisine is a fusion of Swahili, Arabic, Indian, and European flavors.
Here you will find seafood curries, Biryani, Zanzibar pizza, Wali wa Nazi, samosas, sugarcane juice and tropical fruit juices. For breakfast, you will get something savory, usually eggs, something sweet, a pancake, and a tropical fruit.
A must-visit place for an authentic culinary experience is Forodhani Gardens Night Market in Stone Town. Here you can try a variety of street food, including Zanzibar pizza, grilled seafood skewers, and samosas. Prices at Forodhani Gardens typically range from $0.80 to $4.30 (TZS 2,000 to 10,000) per dish.
Another must-visit dining spot in Stone Town is Lukmaan Restaurant. Lukmaan is one of the best restaurants in Stone Town and serves traditional Zanzibari food and Swahili dishes. Meals will cost from $2 to $7.
Friendly reminder: if you decide to go for a seafood platter, check the price of the platter first, or be prepared for a really high bill.

The cost of travel to a destination is often the deciding factor when planning a trip. Like, a lot of people would love to visit Easter Island, French Polynesia, or Antarctica, but the cost of that trip can be astronomical, so we rather choose to travel someplace else.
In general and not surprisingly, Barbados will be more expensive than Zanzibar. While Zanzibar is more affordable, even holidays in Barbados shouldn’t break the bank if planning your trip in advance.
This was also true for me as I spent more in Barbados than in Zanzibar.
For me, the cost of the flight was similar when flying to Barbados and Zanzibar. I rented a car in Barbados but was traveling with taxis in Zanzibar. The price of food is lower in Zanzibar. Tours and entrance fees are more expensive in Barbados (I would say they are overpriced) and I liked the ones in Zanzibar more.

My opinion on Zanzibar vs Barbados
If I had to choose where to go again, I’m not going to lie, it would be a hard decision. Zanzibar and Barbados both have pros and cons and offer a different kind of experience.
But I would probably go to Zanzibar over Barbados for several reasons.
Firstly, I felt that there was more diversity and ‘new’ things to do in Zanzibar. In Barbados, everything had a more familiar feeling. From food, activities, scenery, language, and even culture.
Zanzibar has a more pristine feel and you get just the right amount of cultural shock. I didn’t get any in Barbados since everything is much more Westernized.
I also liked the activities and tours more in Zanzibar than in Barbados. I felt they are overpriced in Barbados, not just compared to Zanzibar but to Europe as well.
They both have beautiful beaches but I would choose Zanzibar. The color of the Indian Ocean in Paje or Jambiani is gorgeous, as well as the one in Nungwi and Kendwa. The color of the Caribbean Sea is stunning in Barbados as well. But Barbados beaches are crowded and full of lounge chairs and umbrellas, while in Zanzibar there are loungers in resorts but not on the beach.
Barbados food is more familiar and international but the food in Zanzibar has a more local flavour.
I found that Barbados is more touristy than Zanzibar. I’ve met a lot of tourists in Zanzibar, but it felt more quiet and peaceful.
While it can be possible (but expensive) to get to some other island in the region from Barbados, Zanzibar can easily be included in your Tanzania itinerary after a safari.
The final decision would come down to who would I go with and the purpose of the trip.
