Why you need a travel budget

I’m not a fan of surprises, especially with the unpleasant ones. Like checking my bank account and seeing that I’ve spent WAY more than I should have.

Which – to be honest – is easy when traveling and not having any boundaries.

That is why I always set my vacation budget.

Creating a travel budget for a trip will help you set a clear spending limit and prevent you from overspending. It is a way of financial empowerment and a way to help you stick to your financial plan.

With budgeting, you can see where your money goes. You will be able to see all expected expenses upfront, whether you’re planning or saving up for a trip.

Having this, you won’t be surprised by sudden costs, and you will be able to enjoy your trip with less worry about money.

To help me stick to my goal, I also keep track of my travel expenses during a trip. I use a combination of spreadsheets and Apps (I really like Tricount).

Now, let’s get your Zanzibar budget sorted.

About Zanzibar travel budget calculator

I created a Zanzibar travel budget calculator specifically for Zanzibar.

Why?

I’ve seen plenty of other vacation budget calculators. But – in my opinion – they are too general. It’s hard to know how much you will spend in a country, if you haven’t even been there, right?

So, you would either be guessing the expected amount or you would have to do the price research first, before inputting the findings into the calculator. (So, what is the point of a calculator then?)

This one was based on my experiences and research from other travelers. It is adjusted for the expenses you can expect in Zanzibar. From transportation, food, and actual tours, to hotels.

You only have to select your travel style and input your details. The automatic calculator will do the rest and give you an estimated vacation budget.

In the following section, I will walk you through a step-by-step guide on how to use the Zanzibar Travel Budget Calculator.

How to use Zanzibar travel budget calculator

Using this budget calculator is simple and straightforward. To get started, you’ll need to input some key information about your trip. Except for the tours, all fields need to be filled out (even if it is 0).

• Number of travelers

Pretty straightforward. Write the number of people traveling. If you are traveling solo to Zanzibar write 1, if going as a couple 2.

• Number of days
Duration of your Zanzibar trip, or how many days you will spend in Zanzibar. This usually corresponds to the length of your Zanzibar itinerary.

• Flight cost per person
Type in the cost of the flight ticket to Zanzibar for a single person. The calculator will do the rest. If you already have a plane ticket, and you DO NOT want to include it in the calculator, write 0 in this field.

• Visa cost
To enter Zanzibar and Tanzania you need a Visa. Select the one that is the right one for you. If you have a USA passport, you will get a Multiple visa ($100) and if you hold an EU passport or Australian passport you get an Ordinary Visa ($50).

• Transport cost per person per day
Transportation in Zanzibar is affordable. I traveled solo to Zanzibar and used taxis. For reference, during my twelve days on the island, I spent $134 on transportation in Zanzibar. More affordable options will cost significantly less.

• Hotel cost per room per night
Here you will have to do research on your own with Booking or another Accommodation provider.  Plan to spend from $50 per night for a standard, mid-range hotel in Zanzibar. I prepared a collection of the best hotels in Jambiani and Stone Town hotels to make your decision-making process easier. My cost for accommodation came to $23 a night (room rate + City tax).

• Food cost per person per day
Food will cost you from $20 to $70 per day, depending if you eat street food, dine in a restaurant, and how many meals per day you will have. My total cost for food and drinks came to $200 or $17 per day. It was a combination of eating in restaurants and street food.

• Miscellaneous per person
This is empty for any other expenses you plan. Souvenirs, SIM cards, Travel insurance, etc. I’ve spent $85 on things that fall into this category. Read what those were in cost of miscellaneous in Zanzibar. Don’t leave this field empty. Write 0 if you think you won’t spend anything.

• Tours and Activities
Here you can choose between the tours you are planning to take and the ones I recommend. Do note, that the price of the tours might change so take those as a reference only. To see what you can expect have a look at the top things to do in Stone Town.

Once you’ve inputted all your details, the calculator will generate an estimated total budget for your Zanzibar adventure. It will give you two figures in US dollars.

One will be the estimated Cost per person, and another estimated total Cost of the Trip. If you are traveling solo to Zanzibar, both of those numbers will be the same. If there is more of you, the travel expenses will be divided evenly.

To get a better sense of the prices in Zanzibar, you can read my Zanzibar budget breakdown which holds everything I spent during my 12-day Zanzibar trip.

Now start calculating!
