Where is Uluru located? (+ Map)

Where is Uluru located in Australia? That’s a question I often hear when I talk about visiting one of the world’s most iconic landmarks — Uluru, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The location of Uluru in Australia is in the Northern Territory, right in the heart of Central Australia. It’s around 450 km (280 mi) southwest of Alice Springs and approximately 2,400 km (1,500 mi) northwest of Sydney, placing it deep in the Australian outback.

BEST PLACES TO STAY in ULURU (YULARA):
Sails in the Desert (the best place to stay at Uluru)
The Lost camel hotel (this is where I stayed)
Desert garden hotel (mid range hotel)
Emu walk apartments (cook your own meals and save)
Outback Hotel & Lodge (great for backpackers!!)
Ayers Rock campground (if you wish to camp)

TOP EXPERIENCES in and around ULURU:
Uluru sunset tour (A MUST DO!)
Uluru sunset, BBQ dinner and star tour (don’t miss it! It’s gorgeous)
Uluru sunrise and breakfast (colors are just insane!)
Uluru sunrise and base walk with guide (explore it like Anangu people)
Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon tour (ultimate outback tour!)
Uluru Field of lights (art instalation)
Uluru Astronomy tour (the best stargazing experience!)
Uluru and Kata Tjuta helicopter tour (this books out fast!)

Uluru (formerly Ayers Rock) is a massive sandstone formation and one of the most recognized orange destinations in the world. I flew here once, and drove from Alice Springs the second time, so I’ve experienced its scale and remoteness firsthand.

This giant rock in Australia is part of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, a sacred site for the Anangu people, the Traditional Owners of the land.

Still unsure where Uluru is located on a map? You’re not alone.

Its remote location means it’s far from Australia’s major coastal cities, but once you see it in context, it becomes clear why it is considered the spiritual heart of Australia.

FRIENDLY REMINDER
Never leave for a trip without travel insurance. Unexpected issues can arise so I suggest using insurance that covers people from all over the world, while outside their home country. You can buy this travel insurance even if you are already abroad.

Uluru’s location and geographical details

If you are thinking on how to get to Uluru and planning a road trip across Australia, the best way to know the location of Uluru is coordinates: 25°20′ S latitude and 131°02′ E longitude. It is located East of the Prime Meridian, and South of the Equator.

It is almost in the heart of Central Australia, in the southwest part of the Northern Territory.

Uluru observes Australian Central Standard Time (ACST, UTC +9:30). Unlike some other regions in Australia, the Northern Territory does not observe daylight saving time. When planning your visit to Uluru, it’s important to account for time differences, especially with the eastern states like New South Wales or Victoria, which are typically 30 minutes or more ahead depending on the season.

Uluru is 348 meters (1,142 ft) high and stretches around 9.4 km (5.8 mi) around the base, making it one of the largest monoliths in the world. The surrounding land is typical Australian outback, with red sand, sparse plants, and spinifex grasses.

The area has a hot desert climate, with summer temperatures up to 40°C (104°F) and winter nights dropping to 5°C (41°F). Rain is very rare, but I was there when it rained and saw waterfalls falling from the rock.

Wondering if Uluru is worth visiting with all the heat? The deep red color of the sand and rock comes from iron minerals in the sandstone, which oxidize and are the reason that Uluru change colour. But best time to visit can enhance the experience, with spring and autumn offering milder temperatures.

Uluru is part of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Kata Tjuta (the Olga) and Uluru are sacred sites for Indigenous Australians — the Yankunytjatjara, Pitjantjatjara, and Anangu people, who are the traditional owners and guardians of this land.
