It is located 54 km (33.5 mi) northeast of the main island of Mahé and 10 km (6 mi) southeast of Praslin Island. La Digue is the third most populated and fourth (fifth if you count Aldabra Atoll) biggest island in Seychelles.

La Digue has a population of around 3.000 people. Most of them live in the (north) west coast villages of La Passe and La Réunion.

Below is a map of the Inner Islands of Seychelles, to help you visualize the location of La Digue and further down in the text best options on how to get there.

How to get to La Digue Seychelles

La Digue Island can be easily reached by sea or by air.

There are daily ferry connections between Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue, the three main islands of Seychelles.

You can reach La Digue by air flying to Praslin and taking a ferry from Praslin, or book a short helicopter flight from Mahé.

I always traveled to La Digue by Cat Cocos ferry. First, from Mahé to Praslin, where I stayed for a couple of days. Then from Praslin to La Digue. Going back from La Digue to Mahé I used a direct ferry if available.

I would highly recommend booking your (ferry) ticket in advance using Cat Cocos online booking system. Especially if you are traveling to Seychelles during their high season (April-May, October-November) which is also the best time to travel to La Digue.

Ferry from Mahé to La Digue

The most common transfer method is by Cat Cocos ferry from Mahé to La Digue Seychelles.

Ferries between islands run 2-3 times per day (depending on the day of the week and the travel direction).

The journey will take between 1h 30 min to 1hr 45m with a short stop on Praslin islands.

Mahé to La Digue ferry cost will depend on the sailing Class, age, and nationality.

One-way ferry ticket for an adult, traveling on lower deck Economy (Coco De Mer) will cost around 72€ ($80), or around 95€ ($105) for a Business (Lazio Lounge) ticket.

Regarding children (from 2 up to 12 years), a one-way ticket on the lower deck will cost 38€ ($40), and infants (less than 2 years) travel for free.

Cat Cocos Berth (ferry terminal) in Victoria is 9.8 km (6 mi) away from the airport or 5.5km (3.4 mi) from Beau Vallon Beach. I would advise you to arrive at the terminal at least 30 minutes before the departure.

The ferry boarding goes on the same principle as at the airports. You have to “check-in” and leave your bags at the counter. You board a ferry without your luggage and get it at your final destination.

Private boat transfer from Mahé to La Digue

Private boat transfer from Mahé to La Digue is the most exclusive and luxurious.

I’ve seen families and honeymooners renting private boats from one island to another. With a private interisland transfer, you will avoid ferry queues in Victoria, your travel time will be shorter plus you will be able to have some drinks along the way.

Booking a private boat transfer to La Digue will be a pricier option than taking a ferry or flight + ferry mentioned above.

If private transfer is something that you are looking for, I would recommend traveling with LizzyBoat.

Day trip from Mahé to La Digue

You can also come from Mahé to La Digue on a day trip.

I haven’t been on a day trip to La Digue and I would strongly recommend staying on La Digue for at least two days.

There are many things to do on La Digue, besides Anse Source D’Argent, that would be a shame to miss. But if you only have a limited amount of days in your Seychelles itinerary, a day trip will do.

For a self-organized Mahé to La Digue day trip book an early morning ferry at 8:00 and arrive at La Digue at 9:30. Then book the last ferry back to Mahé at 16:30 or 17:00 (look at the times in the tables above). This will give you around 7 hours on the island.

Another option is to book a day trip from Mahé. You can opt-in for a shared (less flexibility) or a private one (more flexibility).

To get to the most photographed beach, there is an entrance fee of 150 SCR.

It is located inside L’Union Estate Park, where you can see an old Plantation house built in colonial style, a cemetery where the first settlers of La Digue are buried, and an Aldabra Tortoise enclosure.

One of my favorite things to do is

Where to stay on La Digue Island

La Digue is a small island but still offers a variety of accommodation options.

They cater to different budgets, from dreamy resorts to luxurious hotels, guesthouses, and self-catering apartments, but there are not many. So, I would suggest booking yours in advance

MUST KNOW BEFORE COMING TO SEYCHELLES
You must have all of your Seychelles accommodation booked BEFORE coming to Seychelles. At immigration, when arriving in Seychelles, you will be asked where you’re staying. They will ask about your accommodation when boarding a ferry as well. There is no such thing as winging it. If you don’t have it booked, you will be asked to do it at the airport.

I have a whole blog post dedicated to accommodation on La Digue and the best places to stay on Praslin and Mahé.

LA Digue Self Catering Appartments

I mostly stayed at La Digue Self Catering Apartments. I love the closeness to the La Digue Ferry harbor, and it is a great value considering the location, price, and amenities.

They are in two buildings. Bord Mer is right across from the Fish Trap restaurant, and Mills Complex is 2 minutes walk away.

You will find upscale, tastefully decorated luxury Apartments in both buildings.

They work with Tati’s bikes so you can book your bike (an essential on La Digue) with them and they will arrange it for you. There are supermarkets, bakeries, souvenir shops, and restaurants nearby.
