1. What is Dopamine travel?
Dopamine (n)
/ˈdoʊ.pəˌmiːn/
a happy hormone that is made naturally in the brain, associated with pleasure and reward in the brain when we experience something pleasurable.
Travel (v)
/ˈtræv.əl/
to make a journey, usually from one location to another, often motivated by the desire for leisure, exploration, or cultural immersion.
Dopamine travel (n)
/ˈdoʊ.pəˌmiːn ˈtræv.əl/
a travel trend that centers around sensory experiences and the deliberate stimulation of one’s senses by visiting destinations in certain colors, for certain scents, and sounds.
Unlike traditional travel, which might focus solely on reaching a destination, dopamine travel guides us to explore with our senses.
It adopted the inspiration from the fashion concept of “dopamine dressing,” which involves wearing vibrant colors to boost someone’s mood. This mindful travel trend encourages travelers to be fully present in the moment. It might be on a turquoise beach, when eating sushi in Japan, smelling spices in Zanzibar, or attending a Taylor Swift Eras tour.
But why colors, scents, and sounds? Find out below!

2. Dopamine travel by color
2.1. Power of colors & color psychology
Colors play a significant role in shaping how we feel and experience things.
This phenomenon, known as color psychology, studies how different colors affect human behavior, and how hues evoke specific feelings, moods, and perceptions, like the taste of food.
Even on our travels the power of color on our experiences is undeniable.
Many destinations are associated with particular colors. Serene blue waters in tropical paradises like the Seychelles or Zanzibar bring us a sense of calm and relaxation, while the vibrant orange desert landscapes, such as in Namibia, give us a sense of warmth and joy.
Or think about the lush green destinations like Bali, Slovenia, or New Zealand, where forests evoke tranquility and calm us down, while the romantic pinks of a Japanese sakura kindle passion and romance.
With an understanding of the emotional language of colors, you can select destinations with colors that match the feelings you’re after and align with your desired travel experiences. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, excitement, joy, or calmness, let colors guide you to the perfect place for your next colorful adventure. Find some of them below!

White: Clean, pure, and serene
White evokes feelings of simplicity, purity, and tranquility.
White travel destinations are all across the world. From the ethereal white wonder of Antarctica’s ice-covered realms to the white architectural marvel of Santorini’s whitewashed buildings cascading down the cliffs against the azure backdrop of the Aegean Sea.
Step into the surreal white world of the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, where the world’s largest salt flat creates a mesmerizing mirror effect under the vast, open sky. Then, teleport yourself to the surreal terraces of Pamukkale, Turkey, where white travertine terraces cradle azure thermal pools, resembling a cascade of cotton clouds.
Covered in white is also the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) in Thailand, an architectural masterpiece, symbolizing purity and enlightenment.
2. 2. 2. Yellow places around the world
Yellow: Bright, warm, and joyful
Yellow evokes feelings of happiness, optimism, and energy.
Yellow travel destinations are the ones, bathed in golden hues, stretching all the way from lantern-lit streets of Hoi An, Vietnam to the streets of Izamal, Mexico, known as the “Yellow City,” where every building is painted a brilliant shade of yellow.
Yellow is also Myanmar’s Shwedagon Pagoda, where the glistening golden spire of this sacred site shimmers against the blue sky, and Portugal’s Pena Palace, where the vibrant yellow walls of this fairy-tale castle stand out amidst lush greenery, creating a picture-perfect scene.

Orange travel destinations are predominately desert locations, like Arizona’s Antelope Canyon, where the sun’s rays create a fiery spectacle, illuminating the rust-colored sandstone walls in hushed from orange, red to purple. You can see orange in a famous Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, Japan, where thousands of vibrant vermillion torii gates lead you to the top of Mount Inari.
Continue to another continent, Africa, and find orange landscaped in two famous deserts. Sahara desert and the famous Sossusvlei in Namibia, where the shifting sands haven’t seen a single raindrop for more than 1000 years.
Another famous orange landmark can be found in the heart of Australia’s Outback. Uluru or Ayers Rock is an iconic rust-orange monolith, that rises majestically from the desert floor and has a strong spiritual significance.
2. 2. 4. Red places around the world
Red: Bold, passionate, and full of energy
Red evokes feelings of love, excitement, and adventure.
For me, the most famous red travel destination is in the City by the Bay. The iconic Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, is painted in resplendent in its striking orange-red hue. Another one of those is in Paris, France. The world-famous Moulin Rouge, where the dazzling red windmill is an enduring symbol of passion and revelry.
More red places are found in Tanzania. Not talking about the red Maasai dresses but about Lake Natron, where the water’s deep red hue results from its unique mineral composition. This remote salt lake’s intense color contrasts with the surrounding desolation, creating a surreal and captivating vista.
In Bolivia’s Altiplano region, the striking Laguna Colorada presents a stunning spectacle with its deep crimson waters, set against the backdrop of snow-capped volcanoes. This red high-altitude lagoon is a haven for flamingos and a testament to nature’s artistry.
2. 2. 5. Pink places around the world
Pink: Soft, charming, and sweet
Pink evokes feelings of romance, tenderness, and wonder.
Pink is the color of sakura or cherry blossom, flamingos, and tulip fields in the Netherlands. It is also the color of pink hued nickname of Petra Jordan, also named “Rose City”. The treasury and Monastery were carved into the rose-colored sandstone and still shine in pink hues today. Another Pink City can be seen in Jaipur, India, where architecture is adorned with shades of pink.
If you stroll through the historic streets of Ljubljana, Slovenia, the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation will welcome you with its pastel pink façade. Pink color gives it timeless beauty, just like it does for Tan Dinh Church in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
For more pink travel destinations, head to Australia. Here you will find The Pink Lake, a salt lake with its surreal, bubblegum-pink waters, that creates a scene that seems plucked from a fairy tale. Just like Rio Lagartos in Mexico.

Purple: Enigmatic, regal, and rich with a sense of mystery

Deep in the heart of Mauritius lies Chamarel, a place where the earth itself seems to have embraced the color purple. The surreal landscape of Chamarel’s Seven Colored Earths, with its striking violet hues, is one of the most famous purple travel destinations in the world.
Antelope Canyon in Arizona, known as one of the orange places in the world, occasionally reveals enchanting shades of purple among its rust-colored sandstone walls. This fusion of nature and technology can be seen in the heart of Singapore, in Gardens by the Bay. Here the mesmerizing Supertree Grove, thousands of vibrant, purple-hued plants create a futuristic and magical ambiance.
If you are in search of more places that are purple, visit the wisteria tree in Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi, Japan. Or head to Provence, France, for the lavender fields, where soothing shades of purple create a visual and aromatic symphony, a perfect dopamine travel destination.

2. 2. 8. Green places around the world
Green: Lush, vibrant, and optimistic
Green evokes feelings of tranquility, growth, peace, and security.
The Daintree Rainforest in Queensland Australia is the oldest tropical rainforest in the world. Where ancient trees and exotic wildlife thrive in the lush green embrace of this tropical paradise. Just like in the Amazon Rainforest, often called the “lungs of the Earth,” which spans across several South American countries.
There are many countries known for its green landscapes. Bali for stunning rice terraces, dense jungles, and vibrant landscapes. New Zealand’s South Island boasts some of the most breathtaking green scenery on the planet with majestic ferns. A lot of famous black places can be found in Iceland. The volcanic Island is home to many black sand beaches, and the famous one Reynisfjara stands in stark contrast to the roaring white waves of the North Atlantic Ocean. Iceland is also home to the black church and other black formations.
For more black beaches, head to Hawaii’s Punalu’u Beach or to the island of Tahiti. Over there, the black sands offer a unique and luxurious backdrop to paradise. The contrast between the dark sands and the crystal-clear waters creates a sense of exotic beauty that captures the essence of French Polynesia.

2. 2. 10. Rainbow places around the world
Rainbow: Vibrant, diverse, and a celebration of colors in all their glory.
Rainbow destinations evoke feelings of joy, unity, and the boundless beauty of the world.
Rainbow, is a symbol of hope and a sign that there is beauty after the storm. One of the most famous and most photographed colorful destinations is Batu Caves temple in Malaysia. Which is famous for it’s rainbow-colored steps.
If you then teleport to Europe, you will find colorful cities in Italy. Burano, a small island in the Venetian Lagoon, is known for its colorful houses that line the canals. Colorful are also the five villages in Cinque Terre. Houses of those fishing villages are painted in vibrant pastel shades idyllically overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, giving you a sense of timeless beauty.
Rainbows and colorful places are also found in nature. You will see them in Yellowstone National Park in the United States. Here earth’s colors are on full display in geysers and colorful hot springs. A palette of colors is also on display in geological Vinicunca, Peru. On this “Rainbow Mountain,” you can see layers of vivid colors, ranging from deep reds to vibrant purples.
For more rainbow travel destinations, you can visit Reykjavik and walk on the famous Rainbow Street.
3. Dopamine travel by scent
3. 1. Power of Scents on emotions and memories
Scents, just like colors, have the power to influence our emotions and perceptions. Just how the smell of vanilla reminds us of baking or how the scent of cinnamon can instantly uplift our mood and teleport us into fall or Christmas time. Or think of the smell of coffee in the morning!
It is the same with olfactory senses on our travels.
Our sense of smell is nothing compared to the olfactory abilities of our dog friends. Their sense of smell is up to 100,000 times more powerful than that of humans. Dogs rely heavily on their noses to understand the world around them, and they can pick up on subtle details, emotions, and even illnesses with incredible accuracy.
While we can not do that, the connection between scent and emotions runs deep in our genes. One of the most remarkable examples of the power of scent is the deep connection between a mother and her newborn child.
Scents also have the ability to trigger memories and transport us back in time. The smell of a blooming flower can whisk us back to childhood gardens, or the aroma of a particular dish may evoke memories of our grandmother’s warm kitchen.
And that is what dopamine travel is all about. Encouraging us to explore the world with the help of scents, smells, and aromas. Now, let’s take a look at some travel by smell destinations.

3. 2. Destinations for dopamine travel by scents, smells and aromas
Destinations by scents are everywhere. Each place possesses distinct smells and aromas. If we “pay attention”, they can take a special place in our memory and we remember them by smell. Like vibrant, zesty and coconut aroma of spices in Southeast Asia, the earthy richness of rainforests, or the salty breeze of coastal paradises.
You can test your sense of smell in the heart of Marrakech. Join a night smells, sounds and senses tour in a city where the air is filled with the aroma of various spices. From turmeric, cumin, and saffron, fragrances of culinary heritage, and the art of Moroccan cuisine.
Purple lavender fields of Provence, France, offer a sensory experience like no other, with the soothing scent of lavender hanging in the air. Calm and relaxing aroma perfectly matches the region’s picturesque landscapes. For more nature scents, you can join Rome forest breathing experience, or explore the smells of Kathmandu.
There are other dopamine travel destinations, focusing on olfactory system and nostrils. From Parfum making workshops in Paris, candle making workshop in Australia, to traditional soap making experience in Crete, Greece or booking a relaxing massage in Bali.
Follow your nose and pick your favorite.
4. Dopamine travel by sound
4. 1. Power of Sounds on moods and feelings
Sounds, much like scents and colors, possess the remarkable ability to evoke powerful emotions. Just like how music encourages the early brain development in the fetus, music can lift up our spirits and soothe us. Just look at the power of ASMR with specific triggering audio or visual stimuli.
Just like that music, sounds, and tones also shape our travel experiences.
Music has been found to have powerful effects on the mental and physical health of patients in hospitals and hospices. Different sounds can reduce stress levels, improve moods, increase energy levels, reduce pain, and even speed up recovery time from illness or injury.
Frequencies and vibrations have been known to hold healing powers also in the past. The benefits of the 111Hz frequency were known in a Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum temple in Malta 3 thousand years before Christ. 111Hz frequency helps with the production of endorphins, relieves pain, and helps with cell rejuvenation and regeneration.
Whether it’s the gentle lapping of waves on a serene beach, the rhythmic chants of monks in a distant temple, the melodic tunes of street musicians in a bustling square, or listening to the firewood at camping. Sound enhances travel in many ways.
The benefits of sound are also recognized in dopamine travel. They affect our emotions, heart rate, our productivity, and our behavior and make us hear the destinations we decide to explore. Now, let’s take a look at some places you can travel to for sound and good vibes.

4. 2. Destinations for dopamine travel by sounds
There is a whole orchestra of destinations to travel to for sound. Tokyo’s iconic Shibuya Crossing remains a bustling hub where the city’s vibrant energy can be heard as the rhythm of pedestrian footsteps and the harmonious chaos of traffic. Contrast to that is in the heart of Amazon Rainforest, where the sounds of birds and nature give a tranquil and mesmerizing vibe.
Traveling for concerts is for those whose travel includes live music. From the beats of Tomorrowland in Belgium to the world-famous lineup of artists at Coachella in California, to crowds at Sziget in Budapest, Lollapalooza and Splendour In The Grass. These festivals offer more lively beats compared to the ones in Vienna, where you can visit Mozart and Strauss Concert in historic halls.
If you’re seeking a spiritual connection through sounds, to find balance and inner harmony, head to destinations like Bali and India. Those are a haven for yoga classes and Sound Healing Meditation. These holistic experiences invite you to explore the synergy between sound, mind, and body in tranquil surroundings.
To experience music through rhythm and culture, head to Tanna, Vanuatu where you can visit a Kastom tribe. Or head to Cuba. Cuba’s streets resound with the passionate melodies of salsa, son cubano, and rumba, that will lift your travel adventure to a new level.
All you have to do is pick your vibe and enjoy the sounds.
5. Final thoughts on Dopamine travel trend
The dopamine travel trend focuses on our senses and sensory experiences.
Dopamine travel encourages us to explore the world by visiting destinations in certain colors, scents, and sounds. Traveling to places that boost our endorphins and make us happy. Like how Japan offers a multitude of multisensory travel experiences, from savoring the umami-rich flavors of sushi to admiring the serene beauty of cherry blossoms in full bloom.
If you’re visual and want to adventure the world by colors, plan your visit to orange destinations, add pink travel places to your bucket list, see famous blue cities, and book a holiday in peaceful green landscapes around the globe. Discover places that match your emotions, whether they bring you joy, love, or excitement.
For auditory vacation, visit destinations with relaxing sounds. Like the beach, forest, or Central Park in New York City. Or go to places where frequencies and vibrations create uplifting experiences.
Another adventure is to travel through your sense of smell. Perfect olfactory travel destinations are flower gardens and lavender fields. Embark on dopamine travel Dubai with vibrant cityscape, luxurious experiences, and through scents in spice markets, like in Jordan and Stone Town.
Allow your senses to be your guide on your next adventure.
Happy travels and Shine on,
Anja
