List of the best things to do in Barbados that you can’t miss

Tour a Rum distillery

It’s no secret that Barbados is known for its rum heritage.

As the birthplace of rum, the island’s centuries-old distilling traditions are something you just have to add to your Barbados itinerary – along with as many rum punches as you can manage!

Visit Mount Gay Rum Distillery, the world’s oldest rum producer, established in 1703. Here, you’ll get to learn how rum is produced, how Barbados perfected rum-making over the centuries, and, of course, taste their iconic blends.

For a different experience, head to St. Nicholas Abbey – a place I absolutely loved!

This historic plantation combines a rum distillery with colonial-era charm. Explore the beautifully preserved Jacobean mansion, one of only three of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, and take a ride on the heritage railway for incredible views of the island. Learn about rum-making, tour the distillery and taste their small-batch rum, made using traditional methods.

Go on a catamaran cruise

A Barbados catamaran cruise is one of the best ways to see the island from the water.

Sail along the coast, enjoying snorkeling stops, and refreshing cocktails, rum punches and delicious food in between.

Choose from morning or daytime catamaran cruises, where you can swim with turtles and explore shipwrecks, or opt for a luxury catamaran with lunch and an open bar for a more indulgent experience.

If you prefer a later start, you can book a snorkeling cruise with sunset or an afternoon sailing charter from Bridgetown where you will be able to enjoy sunset trips with drinks and a chilled-out vibe.

Friendly reminder, book your catamaran cruise in Barbados in advance. I had a hard time to book one last minute!

Swim with turtles, dive, or surf

Besides stunning beaches and boat tours, Barbados offers plenty of options for water adventures.

One of the best things to do in Barbados is to swim with turtles and shipwrecks. There are plenty of tours that offer swimming with turtles in Carlisle Bay, but you can also spot them alongside other beaches for free.

For those seeking more of a thrill, take a dive with a submarine. It is perfect for anyone who wants to discover marine life in the depths of the Caribbean. No scuba gear is required, and you won’t even get wet.

If you’re into kitesurfing, Silver Sands Beach on the south coast is perfect for both beginners and pros. On the east coast, Bathsheba Beach is known for its powerful waves and is ideal for surfers looking to catch the island’s best breaks at the legendary Soup Bowl.

Relax on postcard-perfect beaches

Barbados is a true tropical paradise where you can find some of the best beaches in the Caribbean.

The best part is that all beaches in Barbados are free to access. So, relaxing on one of the island’s 80 postcard-perfect beaches is definitely one of the top things to do in Barbados for free.

Choose from the best swimming beaches on the west coast of Barbados, like Sandy Lane, or head to Carlisle Bay for world-class snorkeling. You can even go kitesurfing on the south coast’s Silver Sands, or admire the rugged beauty of the best surfing spots at Bathsheba Beach. There’s no shortage of white sand and turquoise water all around the island.

My personal favorite? Dover Beach. It’s perfect for sunbathing, snorkeling on small coral reef, and swimming with turtles.

Walk around Bridgetown and the Garrison

Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, is home to just over 100,000 people.

While not the largest capital in the Caribbean, Bridgetown is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to its well-preserved colonial architecture, similar to other historic capitals like Willemstad in Curaçao.

It’s a walkable city, so you can easily explore the main sights in Bridgetown. One of the best free things to do in Barbados is walking through its historic streets. Start at National Heroes Square, once known as Trafalgar Square, and check out the Parliament Buildings. You’ll find plenty of souvenir shops nearby.

Next, head to the pink Nidhe Israel Synagogue, one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. From there, cross Chamberlain Bridge for stunning views of the Careenage.

If you don’t want to wander alone, consider joining a walking tour to dive deeper into the capital’s rich history.

Just outside the city, you’ll find the Garrison area, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can learn more about Barbados’ military past. Be sure to visit the yellow George Washington House, where the first U.S. president stayed in 1751.

Take a photo in front of two famous houses

You can’t leave Barbados without taking a photo in front of two famous houses that hold a special place in the island’s history. It is one of the unique things to do in Barbados.

One is the previously mentioned yellow George Washington House. This is where the first U.S. president stayed in 1751 during his visit to the island. It’s one of the few places where you can see what Barbados was like back in the day.

The other house is Rihanna’s home. While it’s a private residence, it’s still a must-see spot for fans. You can see the house where the global superstar grew up, and her new residence on Sandy Lane One. The area around her childhood home was named Rihanna Drive as a tribute to the local girl who became a global icon!

Try delicious Bajan cuisine at Oistins Fish Fry

Once Friday comes during your vacation, it’s time for a it’s time for a fun thing to do in Barbados – tasting the Bajan cuisine at the Oistins Fish Fry.

Try freshly grilled mahi-mahi, marlin, or flying fish served with flavorful sides like rice and peas or the famous macaroni pie. Grab a cold Banks beer or rum punch, enjoy the live music, and let the Calypso beats get you in the island mood.

But Barbados food isn’t just about seafood. One dish you have to try is cou-cou with flying fish, the national dish of Barbados. Made from cornmeal and okra, cou-cou has a smooth, texture and is usually served with a flavorful tomato-based sauce.

If you want to taste even more local flavors, a food tour is a great way to explore everything from rich pepperpot stew to sweet coconut bread. You can even buy some Barbados spice blends as a souvenir to bring back home.

For a quick but delicious bite, head to Cuzz’s Fish Stand near Pebbles Beach. Their fried fish sandwiches on soft salt bread are a local favorite and perfect for a beachside snack.

Explore what is hidden underground

You’re mistaken if you think Barbados is all about rum and beaches. This limestone island’s two underground natural wonders are just as fascinating as its coastline.

To see what is hidden beneath the surface visit Harrison’s Cave.

Inside, you’ll find stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal-clear pools. You can hop on a tram tour for a relaxed experience or, if you’re craving more adventure, take an eco-tour and crawl through narrow passageways to uncover hidden chambers. The best part? It’s warm inside, so you won’t need to layer up like in other karstic caves, like in Slovenia!

Don’t miss out on the Animal Flower Cave, located in the north of the island (it’s closed on Mondays). This sea cave features natural rock pools where you can take a dip and opens up to the views of the Atlantic Ocean. Fun fact: it was once a hiding spot for pirates!

Sleep in luxury accommodation

In Barbados, you’ll find an array of luxurious accommodations, perfect for those looking to indulge. From opulent all-inclusive resorts to intimate boutique hotels, that attract celebrities, stars and Hollywood A-listers.

While top-tier options might not fit every budget, there are also affordable luxury resorts where you can still enjoy a taste of glamour. If you’re on your honeymoon or a romantic getaway, splurging for a night or two at a premium resort could be the perfect treat.

If you’re looking for an exclusive stay, the 5-star Fairmont Royal Pavilion Barbados Resort should be at the top of your list. For a world-class service, private pools, and stunning views of the West Coast, Sandy Lane Hotel is one of the most famous resorts in the Caribbean. Both offer adults-only options, perfect if you are looking for a peaceful and intimate stay.

However, if that price tag is a bit too much for your budget, consider the Crane Resort. It is one of the best places to stay on the island, situated next to the famous pink-sand Crane Beach. This resort is family-friendly and also offers all-inclusive packages. As a bonus, it has a fantastic Sunday breakfast with a gospel choir.

Buy a unique souvenir

In Barbados, there’s no shortage of unique and authentic items worth bringing back.

I was traveling to Barbados with my carry-on only, but I still managed to bring home souvenirs. I always try to pick something meaningful rather than just another item that will collect dust.

The best places to shop are local markets and artisan stores, like the Pelican Craft Centre or the vendors at Cheapside Market in Bridgetown. You’ll also find great souvenir shops at the airport and duty-free stores in Bridgetown, where you can find great deals on Bajan rum and local crafts.

Some of the best souvenirs from Barbados include Bajan spices, handmade jewelry, handcrafted Caribbean art, and, of course, rum. And yes, you can bring rum from Barbados in your carry-on — even if you’re flying to Europe! I brought back plenty, Mount Gay included.
