Are you planning your vacation in Zanzibar?
Searching for the best way to relax in the sun after a safari in Kenya or Tanzania?
Confused about which beach in Zanzibar to choose, the one on the North or South coast?
Nungwi or Kendwa? Paje or Jambiani?
Zanzibar island is ringed by idyllic white sand beaches followed by a turquoise-colored Indian ocean.
So how do you select the best beach to stay in Zanzibar?
What is the best side of Zanzibar to stay?
Don’t worry!
I have had the same questions. Even more of them.
After spending 12 days in Zanzibar and visiting the main beaches, I have put together a guide that will showcase the top beaches in Zanzibar. It will hopefully help you to decide where to stay and which Zanzibar beach is the right one for you. But don’t worry, they all have palm trees, white sand, and a turquoise ocean.
In this beach guide, you will find a Zanzibar map with top beach locations, why you should go there, and where to stay (hotels, resorts, bungalows, etc.) on those Zanzibar beaches. There is also a taxi fare pride reference. Prices are not fixed and bargaining is accepted and expected in Zanzibar.
Here is a guide about the best beaches of Zanzibar.

Disclosure (being transparent and honest should be fun): You know the way I run this blog. I only recommend products, experiences, hotels, etc. that I personally tried and actually own and use. And some that I am positive will be helpful for you. On this site, you will see pretty colorful links which are known as ”affiliate links”. If you click on this link and buy something you like, I’ll earn some money. I’m talking huge bucks here, like a new Tesla, yacht, and 7-bedroom mansion. Ok, honestly, most of the time it will be enough to help me buy treats for my dog and parrot, eco-friendly travel products or to help me build the time machine, and travel back in time to see the dinosaurs, do an interview of stone crafters on Easter island and have a serious chat with masterminds who ‘invented’ Maths. Quick Zanzibar overview
Zanzibar Archipelago is located in the Indian Ocean, only around 35 km (22 miles) away from the coast of mainland Tanzania. It consists of many islands. The biggest ones are Pemba, Mafia, Latham, and Unguja which is often referred to as ‘Zanzibar’.
Main island Unguja is easily accessible by a 20 min flight or around a 3-hour ferry ride from Dar es Salaam. Once in Stone Town (part of Zanzibar city), most of the beaches are from 1 hour to 1,5 hour drive away.
Island of Unguja is only about 85 kilometers (53 miles) long and 30 kilometers (19 miles) wide. That means it is easy to drive to another beach even on a day trip.
If you are staying in Zanzibar for a couple or days, week or more, then I would suggest staying on different beaches. That way, you experience how contrasting they are. You can look into how I planned my 12 days stay in Zanzibar if you need itinerary ideas.
Zanzibar best beaches guide will cover the differences between beaches in Zanzibar. So it will be easier for you to decide where to stay based on the purpose of your visit and what you would like to do on your Zanzibar holiday. Might it be for a honeymoon, sports, swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, or staying in a resort.

1. Which part of Zanzibar has the best beaches
The answer to this will be based on what you would like to do in Zanzibar.
Are you coming here to dive and kitesurf?
Do you simply want to maximize your time on the beach?
Are you coming to Zanzibar on your honeymoon and want to relax in a resort?
The tide or better to say, the difference in the tide, plays a HUGE role in which side of the Unguja island you should choose.
The general rule is that the beaches on the Northeast and Northwest have a smaller difference between low and high tide, compared to the one on the Southeast coast of Zanzibar.
1. 1. Southeast Zanzibar beaches
On the Southeast Zanzibar beaches, the differences between low and hide tide can be more than 4 m at the time of full moon. This means that the ocean will be 2-4 km away from the ‘beach’. These are Paje, Jambiani, Pingwe, Bwejuu, Dongwe and the Michamvi Peninsula. Those beaches also get more wind in the afternoon.
The great thing about beaches on the Southeast is that the majority of the accommodations (even budget ones) are on the beachfront.
When I stayed in Jambiani the most fascinating thing was seeing how water ‘disappears’ and then slowly ‘comes back’. At low tide, it was super interesting to observe how local women came to the beach. They were manning their algae plantations. There were so many things to learn just from observing them and later seeing those algae drying in the village. Red algae still present a great source of income for families. Algae are used to extract carrageenan as a thickener for cosmetics and food additives labeled as E407.
1. 2. Northeast and Northwest Zanzibar beaches
On the Northeast and Northwest Zanzibar beaches water only recedes for a couple of hundred meters. Because the difference between high and low tide is not as noticeable as in the south, those are considered the best beaches in Zanzibar for swimming. You can swim during the whole day without walking to the ocean miles away. The most popular ones are Nungwi and Kendwa.
Before booking your accommodation you can always check tide chart for your area in Zanzibar. This tide schedule will also come in handy if you are planning to visit famous The Rock restaurant. At low tide, you can simply walk to the restaurant, and at high tide, you will need a boat to take you there.
So, which beach should you stay in Zanzibar?

2. Best Zanzibar beaches for kitesurfing
2. 1. Paje beach Zanzibar
Paje beach is located in the middle of the Southeast coast of Zanzibar. It is a long stretch of white sandy beach, with mostly flat and shallow water. You will often find this beach windy which is why Paje has excellent conditions for kitesurfing. Suitable for beginners and experts. Beyond the reef, there are also opportunities for surfing and diving. On days, when the atmosphere is a bit calmer, you can rent a stand-up paddleboard. The best time for kitesurfing is from December until February, and from May to October. Which are also the best times to visit Zanzibar in general.
During low tide, the ocean can be miles away from the beach. During that time you can visit the nearby village, street food market, sign up for a cooking class or have a nice stroll and observe the algae plantations. If you would like to have all-day access to swimming, book accommodation with a pool.
How to get to Paje beach and price reference:
• from Jambiani; taxi from $5-$10 (or 1,5h walk on the beach);
• from Nungwi/Kendwa; taxi from $50 USD and up;
• from Stone Town/airport; taxi from $40 USD and up.
Where to stay in Paje, Zanzibar:
• Mr Kahawa Waterfront Suites; beachfront, travel sustainable property, with a pool and very good ratings;
• Hakuna Matata Villa; beachfront with a pool, amazing location and excellent reviews;
• White Sands; beachfront luxury stay, that gets booked extremely fast with excellent location in Paje;
• see more Paje beach accommodation options on Booking.
2. 2. Jambiani beach Zanzibar
Jambiani beach is like a smaller and quieter and more peaceful version of Paje (or northern beaches). It is located 7 km (4 miles) south of Paje, around 10 minutes drive or 1,5-hour walk on the beach. It has palm trees, breeze and amazing sunrises. What I loved the most was a nice mix of tourists and locals. Jambiani village is just behind all the hotels and resorts.
During low tide, it is easy to watch local women manning their seaweed farm, watch fishermen bringing back their game or kids playing football on the beach. Jambiani, just like Paje, gets windy. So the lagoon is perfect for kitesurfing. If you are interested, have a look at Aquaholics for a price reference. They have offices in Paje and in Jambiani.
How to get to Jambiani beach and price reference:
• from Paje; taxi from $5-$10 (or 1,5h walk on the beach);
• from Nungwi/Kendwa; taxi from $50 USD and up;
• from Stone Town/airport; taxi from $40 USD and up.
Where to stay in Jambiani, Zanzibar:
• New Teddy’s On The Beach; beachfront, travel sustainable property, with a pool and dorm beds;
• Blue Oyster; wonderful beachfront, travel sustainable property, with sea and garden view rooms;
• The Loop Beach Resort; beachfront luxury stay, that gets booked extremely fast;
• see more Jambiani beach accommodation options on Booking.

3. Best Zanzibar beaches for sunsets and nightlife
3. 1. Nungwi beach Zanzibar
Nungwi Beach is widely regarded as one of the best beaches in the entire world. It is located on the top Northwest of Unguja island. From the once quiet and peaceful fishing village, Nungwi is now Zanzibar’s beach with the most developed tourist infrastructure. Here you can find numerous hotels, resorts, hostels, guesthouses, bars and restaurants, mixed with souvenir-selling shops. Here it will be hard to enjoy the beach time and relax. There are Maasai, beach boys (papasi in KiSwahili), who will try to sell you literally anything. There are shop sellers and women offering massage, braiding or henna painting.
A great feature of Nungwi beach is that the difference between low and high tide is minimal. So Nungwi is one of the best beaches if you want to swim the whole day. The coast around it has coral reefs, which is why you will find dive centers all around. This is also a great location for visiting Mnemba island. If you are lucky, you can see dolphins or whales. In Mnarani Marine Turtles Conservation Pond you can swim with green and hawksbill turtles. Nungwi beach has one of the most spectacular sunsets in Zanzibar so having a sunset tour on a dhow boat is a must.
This is the night lovers’ beach famous for parties and nightlife. At night you will find Maasai dancing in bars and clubs. Parties are not like the ones in Southeast Asia but have a more relaxed note, more Hakuna Matata vibe.
How to get to Nungwi beach and price reference:
• from Kendwa; taxi from $2-$5 (or 1h walk on the beach);
• from Paje/Jambiani; taxi from $50 USD and up;
• from Stone Town/airport; taxi from $35 USD and up.
Where to stay in Nungwi, Zanzibar:
• Makofi Guesthouse; budget-friendly accommodation, with amazing BBQ and burgers;
• Z Hotel; a boutique hotel with direct access to the beach and infinity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean;
• The Zanzibari; luxury stay, a bit further out of the ‘Nungwi’ center, offering more peace and quiet;
• see more Nungwi beach accommodation options on Booking.
3. 2. Kendwa beach Zanzibar
Kendwa beach is located only 4 km south of Nungwi. It is a bit more laid back, calmer and quieter than Nungwi. During the years it gained a nickname as ‘Nungwi’s little sister’. It is also known for its party atmosphere, especially Full moon parties happening at Kendwa on the Rocks.
Kendwa is the beach where the tide doesn’t change that much during the day, which makes it perfect for swimming. During low(er) tide you can spot colorful starfish and in the evening enjoy in one of the best sunsets Zanzibar can offer.
When seeing a starfish, please, do not pick them and put them out of the water. Also don’t play with them or put them on your skin or boats for perfect Instagram photos! The starfish would not die from being out of water for A SHORT length of time but being picked up, poked and prodded, can cause excessive stress and eventually death of a starfish. Also, un-gently removal of a starfish from a surface can damage its tube feet, which it needs for feeding.
How to get to Kendwa beach and price reference:
• from Nungwi; taxi from $2-$5 USD (or 1h walk on the beach);
• from Paje/Jambiani; taxi from $50 USD and up;
• from Stone Town/airport; taxi from $35 USD and up.
Where to stay in Kendwa, Zanzibar:
• Kendwa Rocks; popular, budget-friendly accommodation, with private beach;
• Sky-top Villa with Beach-View; exclusive villa, with ocean view from all the view and private beach; gets booked quickly!;
• Daeli Apartment; superb travel sustainable accommodation, short 4 minutes away from the beach;
• see more Kendwa beach accommodation options on Booking.

4. Best Zanzibar beaches for swimming
As already mentioned, Nungwi and Kendwa in the North are the best beaches for swimming in Zanzibar. They are the beaches where the tide doesn’t really change. That is why they are a perfect place if you are looking for Zanzibar beaches for swimming. But there is (at least) one more that needs to be added to the list.
4. 1. Pongwe beach Zanzibar
Pongwe beach is one of the best beaches for swimming in Zanzibar. It is located on the Northeast coast of Zanzibar, where the difference between low and hide tide are not as noticeable as further south.
Pongwe beach looks idyllic. A tropical paradise, with white sand, palm trees and dense vegetation. Beach is protected with an offshore reef that keeps the inner waters calm and safe to swim in. Perfect place for a relaxed holiday.
While this might be the most picture-perfect beach, its location is not the best. Because of the tranquil atmosphere, this is mostly a location for honeymooners and families. So if you are traveling solo this is not the best beach to choose. Because it is more remote, it is not ideal for making day trips. And fewer restaurants and bars means you will have to rely on the offer from your accommodation.
How to get to Pongwe beach and price reference:
• from Nungwi/Kendwa; taxi from $30 USD and up;
• from Paje/Jambiani; taxi from $60 USD and up;
• from Stone Town/airport; taxi from $50 USD and up.
Where to stay in Pongwe, Zanzibar:
• Pongwe Beach Hotel; wonderful location, private beach and swimming pool; gets booked out fast;
• Karibu Beach Resort; superb, beachfront and travel sustainable resort with breakfast included in the price;
• White Paradise Zanzibar; a fabulous resort with a private beach and swimming pool, they also offer car hire;
• see more Pongwe beach accommodation options on Booking.
I know you will remember, but just in case, Pin those!
5. Best Zanzibar beaches for dolphin watching
5. 1. Kizimkazi beach Zanzibar
Kizimkazi beach is one of the more known beaches in the South of Zanzibar. Just like Paje and Jambiani, the difference between low and high tide is really noticeable here. At high tide, the beach almost disappears and at low tide, the Indian Ocean is far far away.
But rather than being known for white sandy beaches and lines of palm trees, Kizimkazi is different. Beaches here are more like small coves, and this place is not the best for swimming. Kizimkazi is more famous for dolphin spotting and mosque. Dimbani mosque is the oldest mosque in East Africa, dating back to 1107 AD.
Dolphin safaris is among the most popular tourist activity in Kizimkazi. If you decide to join a tour, please, do your part and research a tour provider. Always choose an Ethical Dolphin tour. You might want to check out Kizimkazi Ethical Dolphin Tours offered by African Impact. Whatever you decide, do not go on a tour where they chase the dolphins, cross their swimming paths and harm them with boat propellers. Also, if you encounter dolphins, do not touch them or interact with them.
How to get to Kizimkazi beach and price reference:
• from Nungwi/Kendwa; taxi from $55 USD and up;
• from Paje/Jambiani; taxi from $25 USD and up;
• from Stone Town/airport; taxi from $45 USD and up.
Where to stay in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar:
• Coco Reef Ecolodge; superb, travel sustainable, beachfront accommodation, that is booked out more times than not;
• Karamba Eco Boutique Hotel; very good, travel sustainable hotel with a private beach;
• The Residence Zanzibar; five-star luxury accommodation, with private beach and celebrity treatment;
• see more Kizimkazi beach accommodation options on Booking.
Don’t forget to Pin those!
6. Best Zanzibar beaches for honeymoon
You should choose Zanzibar beach depending on what you would like to do or not to do on your honeymoon. The beaches selected here are the ones that are more relaxed, offer more privacy and are less crowded. Those are the ones one the Northeast side of Zanzibar; Matemwe, Kiwengwa, and Pongwe. They are tidal beaches, do book a hotel with a pool if you want to swim around the clock. By all means, you can also spend your holiday in Paje or Kendwa. It is up to your and what kind of vibe you prefer.
6. 1. Matemwe beach Zanzibar
Matemwe is located on the Northeast side of Zanzibar. Beaches on this part are again the ones where the tide does play a difference. So make sure to book accommodation with a pool if you want to swim the whole day.
This is one of the best beaches in Zanzibar for a relaxed family holiday and honeymoon. You won’t find a lot of entertainment or activities, like in Nungwi. Here you will find fine sand and fishing villages. During low tide, the ocean disappears and you can see the seaweed and corals.
Matemwe beach is also a good starting point if you want to go snorkeling and scuba diving. It is less than 2 km offshore from the famous Mnemba island, which has the best diving areas in the whole of Zanzibar.
How to get to Matemwe beach and price reference:
• from Nungwi/Kendwa; taxi from $25 USD and up;
• from Paje/Jambiani; taxi from $50 USD and up;
• from Stone Town/airport; taxi from $45 USD and up.
Where to stay in Matemwe, Zanzibar:
• Salama & Mbuyuni Bungalows; exceptional bungalows 8 minutes walk away from the beach but with a pool;
• The Seles; beachfront bungalows with two pools, with a famous restaurant serving Swahili cuisine and fresh seafood;
• Zanzibar Magic Boutique Hotel; fabulous beachfront hotel with an outdoor swimming pool, where each room has an ocean view;
• see more Matemwe beach accommodation options on Booking.

7. Best Zanzibar beaches for family holiday
7. 1. Kiwengwa beach Zanzibar
As previously mentioned Matemwe beach, Kiwenga is also perfect for a family holiday. It is located 13 km (8 miles) south of Matemwe village. The whole northeast side of Zanzibar is considered as a top location with all-inclusive resorts, for everyone that wants to relax in peace and quiet.
Even if swimming is not possible at low tide, resorts have pools so you can take a dip there. At low tide, the ocean bed reveals fascinating marine life. From starfish, algae, sea urchins, shells, and crabs. Which is interesting to observe for a young at age and young at heart.
Interestingly enough, Kiwengwa is also known as ‘Little Italy’ because many all-inclusive hotels cater to Italian guests. Even locals and Maasai speak better Italian than English. Not always. You will find beach boys and Maasai selling stuff but not as many and are less persistent than the ones in Nungwi.
Where to stay in Kiwengwa, Zanzibar:
• Lazy Beach House; very good hotel located just a few steps from the beach and offers continental breakfast;
• Villa Lala; superb beachfront accommodation and breakfast, with amazing interior and design;
• White Dream; exceptional travel sustainable and beachfront hotel that is usually booked out;
• see more Kiwengwa beach accommodation options on Booking.
How to get to Kiwengwa beach and price reference:
• from Nungwi/Kendwa; taxi from $30 USD and up;
• from Paje/Jambiani; taxi from $50 USD and up;
• from Stone Town/airport; taxi from $45 USD and up.
8. Best Zanzibar beaches to escape the crowds
8. 1. Michamvi Peninsula
To escape the crowds, relax, take a time off and enjoy the ocean the best location is the Michamwi peninsula. Here almost no one will disturb your peace while reading a book. You will find it on the top east coast of Unguja island. Here you can find breathtaking shorelines and unspoiled, miles-long beaches. This is a more secluded area and there are only a few large beach resorts in the area. The peninsula has two parts.
8. 1. 1. Michamvi Kae beach Zanzibar
Michamvi Kae is on the western side of the peninsula and on the shores of Chwaka Bay. Here you will be able to see beautiful sunsets. There is also a reef nearby that offers diving and snorkeling opportunities. Like in most places, if you want to swim during the whole day, book an accommodation with a pool.
8. 1. 2. Michamvi Pingwe beach Zanzibar
Michamwi Pingwe beach is on the eastern side of the Michamvi peninsula. It is further out from the main tourist hotspots so fewer resorts and restaurants. But more time to enjoy peace and quiet. It has a white sandy beach, palm trees, and small coral coves.
Like with other beaches on the East side, there is a significant difference between the tides. Book accommodation with the pool or enjoy watching seaweed. This is also a good place for kitesurfing but not as good as Paje or Jambiani.
Pingwe beach is famous for The Rock restaurant. It sits on the top of coral rock. During low tide, you can walk to it but at high tide, it is accessible by a small boat. It is a famous seafood restaurant, a bit higher priced but it offers amazing views. If you decide to dine there, reservations are welcome.
Where to stay in Michamvi peninsula, Zanzibar:
• have a look at Michamvi accommodation options on Booking;
• see more Pingwe beach accommodation options on Booking.
How to get to Michamvi peninsula and price reference:
• from Nungwi/Kendwa; taxi from $60 USD and up;
• from Paje/Jambiani; taxi from $15 USD and up;
• from Stone Town/airport; taxi from $50 USD and up.
Pinning is winning!
9. Best Zanzibar beaches for relaxation
9. 1. Dongwe beach Zanzibar
Dongwe beach is another beach on the eastern side of Zanzibar, where tide makes a difference. It is around 5 km (3 miles) south of Pingwe and 10 km (6 miles) north of Paje. It is a quiet and remote area, full of fishermen. They have their dhow boats anchored on the beach so swimming, even at high tide will be a bit harder. Besides your accommodation, there are not many bars and restaurants around. So you would have to hire a taxi and drive to Paje for more social life and more dining options.
9. 2. Bwejuu beach Zanzibar
Bwejuu beach is also a tidal beach located only 3 km (less than 2 miles) north of Paje. Because of the white sand, this is one of the top beaches in Zanzibar. And at the same time, it is also one of the best beaches for relaxation. Even occasional cut of electricity or mobile signal helps with that.
Like in Dongwe, there are not many restaurants and bars and if you are more of a social butterfly, you would have to search for more social life on other beaches (Jambiani or Paje). Here the focus is more on peace, privacy and quiet.
More popular activities here are a visit to the mangrove forest, dhow boat trip, a reef safari or a day trip to Jozani Forest, where you could see Red Colobus Monkeys. One of the must-do’s while on Zanzibar island. You could also visit a Bwejuu village or watch locals manning algae plantations.
How to get to Dongwe and Bwejuu beach and price reference:
• from Nungwi/Kendwa; taxi from $60 USD and up;
• from Paje/Jambiani; taxi from $15 USD and up;
• from Stone Town/airport; taxi from $45 USD and up.
Where to stay in Dongwe and Bwejuu beach, Zanzibar:
• Anna of Zanzibar; superb and one of a few beachfront accommodations in Dongwe, with restaurant and bar;
• Kilimani Kwetu Beach Hotel; fabulous, affordable, beachfront location, offering breakfast;
• Xanadu Villas & Retreat; luxurious retreat with restaurant and spa, you will be lucky if there will be any available rooms;
• see more Dongwe and Bwejuu beach accommodation options on Booking.
Pinning is winning and sharing is caring! What are you choosing?
10. Best beaches close to Stone Town
Sad truth is that UNESCO famous Stone Town offers many beautiful things to see and do but beaches are not on that list. You will find nicer ones around the island so I would strongly recommend taking a day trip and visiting at least one.
If that is not an option, there are a few places where you can take a dip in the Indian ocean. A nice place to take a swim in Stone Town is between Serena hotel and 6 Degrees South restaurant. When I was there, there is no security and the beach. So only bring basics. Both themes beach was full of tourists, sunbathing and reading books and locals, practicing their skills and playing soccer in the afternoon. Close to the ferry terminal the water is dirty, oily, full of trash and city sewage comes into the ocean in this area.
If you want to spend a couple of hours in a resort, like a daycation, and use their pool and beach, there are a couple of options available south of Stone Town. You can do that as a day trip or like I did it on my way to the airport.
In general, beaches here are not as nice as the ones on the North or East. They are more mangrove style and the water bed has a ‘muddy’ feel. But all the resorts have a pool so you can have a swim there. They all have nice ocean and sunset views. Zanzibar beach resort has an amazing pool but the beach there is not the nicest. If you are only there for a daycation, the entry fee is 7000 TSH and can be redeemed for food and drinks. I spend my daycation at Jungle Paradise Beach Resort & Spa. The entrance fee was 10.000 TSH but it could be redeemed for food and drinks. They have nice lounge chairs and an amazing view. Beach is a mangrove one and they have a pool on the beach.

All of the above in a nutshell
Zanzibar. Home of the most beautiful beaches in the world. When choosing the best beach to stay in Zanzibar keep in mind that not all Zanzibar beaches were created equal. Some are better for swimming, others for secluded relaxation. Then again, others are better for kitesurfing, some for watching stunning sunsets and a few for dolphin safaris. But almost all of them give you the option to relax on a white sand with a cocktail or local Kilimanjaro beer in hand.
The general rule of thumb is that best beaches in Zanzibar for swimming are on the North of the island. Those are Nungwi and Kendwa. The difference between low and high tide is minimal ‘up’ there, so you can swim during the whole day. Northern Zanzibar beaches alo have the most developed tourist infrastructure.
If you want to kitesurf, the best area would be on the Southeast side of the island. You will find Paje and Jambiani beach there. During high tile the lagoon is a perfect place ti kitesurf, even for beginners. But at low tide, the ocean will be miles away, so at that time the best thing would be watching women manning algae plantations or visiting a village.
I hope you found this beast beaches in Zanzibar guide helpful and that map helped to visualize where each of the described beached is located. The intention of this Zanzibar top beaches guide was to help you decide which beach is the best for your traveling style, level of activities you want to do and how much you need to recharge.
But whichever beach you choose, you will not be disappointed. I mean, there must be tougher questions than deciding which beach you want to spend your tropical holiday on? Right?!
If you would have to choose one Zanzibar beach, which one would it be?
Which 3 top beaches in Zanzibar would you like to visit?
I would love to know how you pick your favorite beach.

Wow, this is a VERY thorough post! There are beaches for everyone!
Thank you! I was missing information like this when I was searching for where to stay in Zanzibar, so I though, well, maybe I should write one if someone else out there finds it helpful
This is a very extensive post and list of beaches in Zanzibar – which to choose?
Thank you! Now, that I have visited them, I would go to Jambiani! It is my favorite without a doubt! 😀
Anja–just curious why Jambiani is your favorite? (Just booked and very excited but curious why you love Jambiani?). Also, any recommendations–restaurants, excursions, etc?
Thanks for compiling this list.
Hey!
I liked it because there are not many tourists (compared to Nungwi or Kendwa) or even Paje. It is just a small village and behind the beach there are hotels and after that a village. Sou can get a nice village feel and see how they actually live. Plus the ocean color in Jambiani is absolutely superb.
For restaurants, I was just walking along the beach and tried different ones. Sorry, cant remember the nae atm.
For tour is depends on your itinerary. You can walk by the beach to Paje and visit Kahawa Cafe. Or there are Kuza caves very close by Jambiani beach. would recommend that. Maybe also go on a dhow boat in Jambiani.
If you will be coming from North or going towards North, then skip Mnemba island or Blue Safari. Mnemba island is closer to Nungwi, so ca go from there, and Blue safari is similar to Nakupenda (close to Stone town). IF you wish check the dolphin tours from Kizimkazi, but check which ones are doing it in a sustainable way (meaning, not chasing them). Relatively close to Jambiani is also the Rock restaurant and Jozani Forest. You can visit both on your way towards North or on your way from North.
Hope this helps.
Depending on you itinerary, I would go on
The beaches here look incredible! And I love how you included info on which beaches are best for what!
Thank you so much! Yeah, I was searching for info like this like crazy before I went there … and it was so hard to actually know. Some said Paje and some Nungwi, but no one told me WHY. Glad you liked it
I wish I’d read this before my recent trip to Zanzibar… we didn’t pick the best beach!
Which beach did you choose?
I’m hoping to go to Zanzibar and Tanzania in 2024. Loved this post and will certainly refer back to it when I plan that trip. The sunsets look astounding!
Wow! You should definitely go! It is amazing, so much to see and experience.
Can’t wait to make this trip a reality one day!😊
You should! It is amazing over there!
Hello! Such an informative article. I appreciate your time in putting this together. I am curious about mosquitoes. How bad were they? Did you take malaria pills before visiting? Do you have any suggestions on how to deal with them?
Hey! Thank you so much!
To make a picture about mosquitos a bit clearer… I was there in August and in rained twice. I only really noticed them once (on the evening when it was raining). On other days I wasn’t really seeing/hearing mosquitos. I was not taking malaria pills but was using mosquito repellent with 30+ deet. Also, in all accommodations where I was staying there are mosquito nets over beds (they had no holes). When I was talking to other travelers, the ones who were traveling only in Zanzibar, didn’t take any malaria pills. Some of the ones that came from Kenya or were on a safari before coming to Zanzibar were taking pills. And some stopped when they arrived in Zanzibar.
FYI: In the past decades, there have been multiple interventions and the malaria rate in Zanzibar is currently below one percent – the lowest in Tanzania and in the Eastern and Central Africa. (Data: World Health Organisation)
