The face behind Anja On Adventure

Hello Sunshine!

Seeing you here makes me smile.

Thank you for stopping by and showing interest in knowing a bit more about me.
You are the best!

My name is Anja (read as Anya) and I come from a small country Slovenia. I’m a geography and history teacher, tour guide, former Dream-Teamer, afraid-of-boats yacht stewardess, love to fly frequent flyer, self-taught photographer, digital marketer, puzzle champion, and travel content creator. Plus, I love making jams!

As you can see, I don’t have a passionate love story about my online business, where I can say ”I knew I was going to do this since I was 10”.

Actually, when I was 10 I wanted to be Geography and History Teacher, Tour Guide, and flight attendant. (Social Media and Travel Content Creator was not a ‘thing’ back then when I was 10.) And to be honest, I did get 2 out of 3. I do have a Teaching Degree and a Tour Guide Licence. Did try to be a flight attendant but I am a couple of cm’s too short, so I never made it. I comfort myself by saying that ‘all good things come in small packages’ – like diamonds or pearls for example. 😀

Before the beginning

First of all, I think it is important to address the elephant in the room. To be a successful (travel) content creator, blogger, or influencer, you don’t have to come from a rich family or be rich. I grew up in a village with 350 people, where everybody knows everybody. The closest bigger town has around 25.000 people and my whole country roughly 2 million. To put things in perspective, the well-known Wembley Stadium has a capacity of 90.000 people, and there are more than 2,2 million people living in Brisbane, Australia and Huston, United States.

With my parents and brother, we never really traveled together – like going places for sightseeing.
During winter, we went skiing, in Slovenia. In summer we went on a holiday to the Croatian coast.

I first traveled abroad with my aunt in a campervan. During that trip, we visited Italy, Switzerland and the South of France. After that, I went on a trip with my grandma, by train, to Munich, Germany, where we visited her brother.

At that time, there was also a quiz TV show for Primary school kids. Their ad was saying that anyone who ‘shows up’ on the show and wins will get a trip to Venice. So, of course, I applied (was 10 at the time). And I won (3 times). And I went to Venice. Mission accomplished.

The world of traveling and adventures started happening while studying Geography and History. During that time I visited Morocco, Portugal, and Turkey.

Soon after that came my first solo travel experience that took me to New York City, USA. After my return back to Europe, it didn’t take long for me to move to New Zealand. And after that to Australia and in between I worked in Samoa and Fiji …

The beginning

Getting here was a long process that took me more than 7 years to even start.

I always admired people that can write travel blogs and put them online for the whole world to see. I was thinking about creating a blog when I first moved to New Zealand.

Fun fact; the ‘O’ in the logo was designed back then when the idea about all of this came to my mind. The ‘O’ and the ‘line’ were inspired by my blood type. But back then I wasn’t ready, didn’t know how to approach it, didn’t want to write, and was full of excuses why NOT to do it.

I have no idea when the shift from ‘I don’t know how’ to ’if they can do it, I can do it to’ happened.

I think the mindset switch happened because of traveling. It was or is a sum of exploring and adventure. Those sweet unexpected moments and out-of-the-blue job offers. Meeting all the people, that became my closest friends, who are still inspiring me, to get serious with traveling, blogging and content creation.

So, how did it all happen?

It took me years of observing, reading others’ blogs, and learning about Instagram, Pinterest, design … I took online digital marketing courses, website courses and expand my knowledge about SEO. It didn’t happen overnight but it did take A LOT of trial and error. You can call it stubbornness, persistence, willingness to learn… Your pick.

What also played a huge role, were things that my past jobs have thought me.

Anja on Adventure testing Survivor challenge

I learned how to …
… make videos from the pros who work for Netflix;
… get the right frame from being a part of TV production crew;
… what ‘strength’ means by being a ‘DreamTeamer’ on Survivor;
… present boring things in a fun way by being a teacher;
… tell a (funny) story from TV producers;
… prepare what to say from being a tour guide and teacher;
… pose and talk on a camera from Survivor host and his team;
… create a perfect itinerary by traveling & being a travel agent;
… sell and pitch with confidence being a server;
… make the detail pop up by being a yacht stewardess;
… communicate in a foreign language by living abroad …

An now?

Now you are here, reading About me page on my travel blog.

It was a long way for me to get here but this is just the beginning. I have a huge travel bucket list that is filled with tropical destinations, like French Polynesia and the Cook Islands, hot and warm African countries, places with amazing local cuisine, like Mexico or the ones with an impressive history, like Cuba, Peru, Easter Island …

I created Anja On Adventure because I want to inspire you to travel more and at the same time show you how you can do it too!

Anja On Adventure combines two passions of mine.

As a tour guide, I want to show you places and new destinations that you might not consider visiting before.

As a teacher, I want to help you do the same. May it be with travel and packing tips, showing you how to run your Instagram and Pinterest account.

To live your life to the fullest, you don’t have to go through every one of my experiences to begin. You also don’t need years of experience. You just need to start. I can not say it will be easy but it will be worth it. Believe me, if I can do it, you can do it too! Follow me around and let’s adventure!

Shine on,
Anja
